Dharma, Freedom and Empowerment

A Weekend with Professor Douglas Brooks

Upcoming Workshop
April 4, 5 ,6

Many of you have heard us at Yoga Montclair talk glowingly about Prof. Douglas Brooks and Rajanaka Yoga Philosophy. We are incredibly lucky to have him available to come to Montclair to teach us about a tradition of yoga that is about empowerment, not sublimation and suplication. The Rajanaka Tradition does not believe that yoga is a path seeking unearthly transcendence but a process of embracing our richly intricate woven lives in this world. The myths of the Hindu tradition teach us new ways to see ourselves. The stories of Shiva that you will hear interpretted by Douglas Brooks are not simple moralistic tales, but complex truths that will open us to reveal more of our deepest divine and human natures. - Vishali

In the mythologies of Shiva, the Lord of Yoga, we find the opportunity to reconsider every aspect of our lives. Shiva means to turn us inside out, take us upside down, and invite us to a revolution of values, insights, and empowerments. How might we live as yogins in a world that more often rewards the conventional, the ordinary, and the mundane? How do we bring the radical insights of Shiva into the world in ways that will create more empowered self-understanding and practical crazy wisdom? In this seminar we'll look closely and deeply at several of the most intriguing, subversive, and astonishing myths of Shiva, drawing their interpretation into an understanding of Dharma that we can apply to our contemporary world and to our practical lives. In Shiva we will find a mirror of the Self that reveals so much of what we might otherwise fail to see, for Shiva is the power to breakthrough preconceptions and conventions to reveal ever-new secrets of revelation and concealment. No familiarity or previous background is expected or required. Bring an open mind and a willing heart, Shiva will take care of the rest.

Who is Prof. Douglas Brooks?

Dr. Douglas Brooks is among the world's leading scholars of Hindu Tantrism and the esoteric traditions of the Goddess. He came to teaching Yoga students after meeting John Friend in the mid 90s and suggesting the name 'Anusara' for John's method of yoga. He has become one of modern yogas greatest resources as he offers us multiple interpretations of the historical evolution of yoga and insight into how we can apply and evolve the teachings of India in the West.
After receiving a Masters degree from Harvard Divinity School, he continued his studies in the history of religions, Sanskrit, and Indian studies going on to receive a second Masters and a Doctorate from Harvard University's Center for the Study of World Religions.
In addition to his formal Western education, Douglas lived for many years in India in the house of his Teacher according to the traditions of Guru Kulam in which the student is initiated into all facets of the Indian classical Sanskrit education, including philosophy, yoga, ritual, and worship. Douglas' Teacher, Gopala Iyer Sundarmoorthy was not only an eminent scholar of Hinduism, but a Master of the Tantric Goddess tradition known as Auspicious Wisdom, or Shri Vidya.

What is the Immersion?

The Anusara Immersion takes you on a journey into Anusara Yoga's Asana, Philosophy, Pranayama, and Meditation. The Immersion is perfect for those wishing to explore the Full practice of yoga. There is no pressure to teach yoga or any instruction on how to teach, only the pleasure and challenge of basking in the deeper knowledge of this practice.

Should I take an Immersion or a Teacher Training?

Take a 108-hr Immersion first! Then if you feel ready, apply for a teacher training! The Immersion is designed to provide a solid foundation of practical understanding for all serious students of Anusara Yoga, and for those students who wish to enter into teacher training. The process of being in an Immersion prepares you fully on all levels: Refines your knowledge of Anusara Yoga. The Immersion will give us all the opportunity to establish a new depth of commitment to our selves and each other.

What is the 3-Part Curriculum?

John Friend has just developed a new Curriculum for Anusara Immersions. It is a 3 part process totalling 108 hours. This way we become better students before rushing into teaching and learning yoga becomes the lifetime process it was meant to be. The the Immersion is comprehensive and refined, and is now a full preparation for those wishing to teach Anusara Yoga. Take the first step with Immersion I a total of 36 hours beginning March 7th!

Are there Pre-requisites for the Immersion?

Only a desire to deepen your knowledge is reqired

What will it be like to be in the Immersion?

In all three phases of the Immersion, we come together, have satsang, and spend time uncovering the subtleties of Anusara's Universal Principles of Alignment and Anusara's Level 1 & 2 Syllabi. There will be a reading list and journaling suggestions. There will be reading assignments to expand your understanding of the foundation of yoga. You will be asked to attend as many classes as you can during the immersion so that the ideas we study on the weekends can be practiced during your week.
